A wooden table.
Barren western land,
Desolate,
Until the gunslingers come,
And spill their blood
On the enameled amphitheatre.
The table is picked out
Based on the wood color,
And the strength of the euls.
Why don’t the purchasers
Consider the screws?
The nails?
The bolts?
The nuts?
They only think of the pretty backdrop,
Not the people who build the stage
And hold it up.
Why is it,
That only the pretty,
and polished wood
Is thought of?
And why is it,
That when the table is built,
We cover up the screws,
And nails,
And bolts,
And nuts?
Why do we want to cover up
The things that make up
The table?
I’m sure some of these
Screws, nails, bolts, and nuts
Would rather be the parts shown,
Or even the parts that cover up the
Screws, nails, bolts, and nuts.
However, some of these
Screws, nails, bolts, and nuts
Are proud, to be
What hold up everyone else;
To be considered ugly,
To do what they need to do
So that the wood can be shown.
We’d rather have a table that just
Sticks.
But that doesn’t exist.
There are only tables which
Need to be held together by
The ones who can be
A bit screwy,
Sound like nails on a chalkboard, but
Are bolted in their position, and
That takes some serious nuts.
I don’t use the bits of plastic,
That cover up
The screws,
And nails,
And bolts,
And nuts.
Because they deserve to be seen,
They deserve their time
To shine.
But they won’t shine to us.
They’ll only shine to themselves,
And each other, and though
None of us will understand them,
They will understand themselves,
And know their importance.
