I have never understood why
People want to move to small towns
Or why they want to be such small things.
One kid wants to own a restaurant.
Another wants to play football.
That’s all perfectly okay for them,
But the dreaded life of normalcy
Is not the one for me.
And the problem with “once upon a times”
Is that they only happen once.
You have one chance to be great.
I will not let my life amount to one miserable moment
One last-minute decision I was forced to make.
I will not have just one story to tell.
In a world of “once upon a times”
and “happily ever afters”
I will be a story that began when I decided
And one that will end when I want it to.
For when your mind is running a hundred miles
You can’t keep up with just one step.
The world only lets you fit one mold
But there’s too many things I want to do.
I want to dance with the stars
On the vague stretches of our atmosphere
And I want to sing a melody with a pen
And a crisp piece of paper.
I want the world to hear my voice
When I speak up for my right to change
And my right to grow however much I please.
This is a world full of nothings
But I will be at least one person’s everything.
And so I have recently decided that
I will not let myself be small.
I will not work at the nearest plaza
And I will not live in some nowhere-town.
I do not want to throw my life away
And live in a cute little house
On the corner of “Settled” and “Disappointment”
Watching me and my children
Become nameless nothings.
The world is too large, it is too exciting.
I am going to be something no one has seen before.
I am going to be the name someone thinks of
When their eyes are lost in the stars
And they wonder what is hidden behind them.
I will be the name someone thinks of
When they decide to be more
Than what the world says they can be.
I will be me.
I will be wild, wacky, wondrous, wise,
Fun-loving, futuristic, funny, and free.
Most of all, I will be free.
For normalcy may mean dreadful safety
But freedom means an adventurous risk.
